Class 4 Impact-Rated Shingles: A Clear Lake Homeowner’s Buying Guide
Updated: Oct 14
A roof replacement gives you an opportunity to compare impact-rated shingles before the next hailstorm. If you are shopping in Clear Lake, Webster or League City, the useful question is not simply whether a quote says “Class 4.” It is which product is being specified, what that rating measures and how the complete roof will be installed. This guide helps you ask for a clear, written answer.
What does Class 4 mean?
Class 4 is the highest classification in the UL 2218 impact test. It describes a laboratory result for a particular roofing product. The rating does not make a roof hail-proof, guarantee it will escape storm damage or replace the product’s written warranty. Impact resistance and wind resistance are separate specifications; ask your roofer to explain both.
Request the exact manufacturer, product name and current impact classification in your proposal. Ask to see the rating on the supplied packaging and keep photographs or documentation after installation. A broad phrase such as “architectural shingles” does not establish a Class 4 rating.
GAF and Owens Corning options to compare
GAF identifies Timberline AS II and Timberline UHDZ with UltraMat as Class 4 options. Its current impact-resistance information lists Timberline HDZ as Class 3, so HDZ should not be described as Class 4 without product-specific evidence. Owens Corning identifies TruDefinition Duration FLEX as a Class 4 option. Confirm the exact product, packaging and local availability rather than treating every shingle from either brand as equivalent.
RANLOCK is listed as a GAF Certified contractor and an Owens Corning Roofing Preferred Contractor. When requesting an estimate, ask which suitable products are available for your home and which manufacturer warranty, if any, is included with the proposed system. Have the warranty name and registration responsibilities written into the scope.
Ask your insurer before relying on a discount
An impact-resistant roof may qualify for an insurance discount, but eligibility and savings depend on the insurer and policy. Before purchasing, ask your agent which products and tests qualify, what proof is required and whether the policy contains a cosmetic-damage exclusion. Texas Department of Insurance guidance explains that verification requirements vary; do not budget around a promised discount that your insurer has not confirmed.

Questions to discuss during your roofing or exterior evaluation.
Compare the roof system and the installation
A shingle label is only one part of the proposal. Review the tear-off scope, underlayment, leak barriers where required, starter shingles, flashing, ridge components and ventilation. Ask how damaged decking will be documented and priced if it is uncovered. These details make quotes easier to compare and help prevent an attractive product name from hiding an incomplete scope.
Ask who will oversee the job, protect the property and explain the final inspection. Keep the material list, photos and warranty documents with your home records. If you have an active leak, arrange an assessment first; upgrading shingles does not diagnose the current problem.
Questions to bring to your assessment
Which exact product is proposed, and where is its impact rating documented? What changes between the standard and impact-rated options? What accessories and ventilation work are included? What additional work could change the price? What must I provide to my insurer after installation? A useful estimate answers these questions for your actual roof.
